Covid-19 and Sustainability

Back in March, if you were to tell me that the pandemic was still going on in August, I would think you were crazy. But here we are, months in and no end in sight. Many places are opening up again and now is the time when we need to ask ourselves how we can keep our health and the planet in mind.

As we all know, wearing a mask is crucial. Masks help protect you from giving it to others, and others from giving it to you. There are plenty of options for masks these days, and a large number of cool designs and colors to choose from. My recommendation? Reusable cloth masks.

Cloth masks, when mixed with social distancing, are one of the best ways to stop the spread of Covid-19. They are not as effective as N-95 masks, but with shortages of these masks, they should be reserved for medical workers only. Disposable masks also contribute to pollution. Since they are disposable, and don't biodegrade, they just end up in landfills or the ocean. Like the rings of plastic that come with pop cans, animals can get tangled up and choked in them. In the situation that you have to use a disposable mask, try to use it at least 2 times and cut the straps when you go to throw it away. If you have a choice, a cloth mask works the best. They are inexpensive, washable, reuseable, and effective.

Next brief topic: Reuseables

Bringing your own container, straw, or utensil may seem risky right now. Don't worry! As long as you sanitize your container before and after, and wash it too, you will be fine! As far as straws and utensils, just wash them as normal and you're good to go.

Last, I would like to add that sometimes, single use is the only available option. Don't feel bad. Sustainability is a privilege that not everyone has access to. If you have to use hand sanitizer in plastic bottles, that is okay. In times where there aren't other options, its better to have something over nothing. If you're worried about the plastic, consider buying hand sanitizer and other items in bulk and then refilling the smaller containers you take with you. If you have the option to avoid single use, great! If you don't, work with what you have, and don't feel bad that you don't have an option.

Thanks for reading and remember to wear a mask!
